Overview

Main:

The MAG-8000 was released in 1999, it is designed to allow you to easily and quickly sharpen a rotary lawn mower blade. The MAG-8000 is the first sharpener of its kind to be able to both sharpen conventional (flat or straight) lawn mower blades AND mulching (curved cutting edge) lawn mower blades. It is also able to easily sharpen both left and right handed blades with a single direction motor.

Features:

The MAG-8000 is best suited for Servicing Dealers, Landscapers, and large Lawn Care Professionals. People who rely on employees to sharpen their blades will appreciate the full ONE Horsepower continious duty motor - it will stand up to the abuse of employees with little mechanical feeling. Landscapers and Lawn Care Professionals who use WALKER brand mowers will enjoy the open free view when sharpening both right as well as left-handed blades.

The MAG-8000 has the ability to sharpen a lawn mower blade in 60 sec -2 min or less.

MAG-Superiority

MAG-Superiority:

What makes a MAGNA-MATIC MAG-8000 different from any other lawn mower blade sharpener in the industry? In this section of our website we will review the design components and high quality standards that make MAGNA-MATIC products stand out from the crowd.

ABILITY
The MAG-8000 unlike any other sharpener manufactured today can sharpen a mulching lawn mower blade and maintain the same consistent angle/bevel along the whole edge. Some other sharpeners claim that they can sharpen mulching blades, but they will damage and change the blade's cutting edge by not maintaining the same angle along the whole cutting edge.

DESIGNED TO PERFORM
Here we will review some of the design features the allow the MAG-8000 to out perform all other grinders.

Motor - Grinding Wheel Relationship Design
As depicted below in the diagram the MAG-8000 has a minimum unsupported overhung load. The MAG-8000 has less than 1 inch, whereas other blade grinders have up to 4 inches of overhung load. Unsupported overhung load creates an un-rigid machine that will vibrate. The reasons other grinders create so much unsupported overhung load is because the motor housing interferes with the ability to sharpen the full blade edge length.  Overhung load is defined as the radial load on the output shaft extension produced by a grinding wheel, pulley, chain sprocket, gear, crank arm, cam or similar device.  It is simply unsupported load that will reduce rigidity and create vibration.

Work Table Design Differences
In the diagram below you can see the difference between the MAG-8000 and all others where their work table designs differ. The MAG-8000 has a flat work table made from (UHMW) Ultra-High Molecular Weight abrasion resistant engineered plastic. This allow easy sliding across it. Where others are all made from steel, which does not allow easy movement. More importantly is the issue of SUPPORT. If you notice in the ALL OTHERS work table, the area where the "grinding" is taking place on the blade - the blade is NOT being supported. This makes the grinder noisy and inefficient when grinding. Now look at the MAG-8000 you will see the blade is always supported where the grinding is taking place, as well as around the grinding.

Grinding Wheel Choice - All Grinding Wheels are NOT Equal
There is a distinct difference in grinding wheels, and the biggest misconception is the idea that harder is better. This could not be further from the truth. Grinding wheels should be chosen based on the type of steel that you would like to grind. All grinding wheels with: 5/8" 1/2" & 3/4" dia arbor hole sizes are BENCH GRINDER WHEELS. The are made for sharpening tool bits (and other hard steels) that are generally 65 Rockwell hardness. When sharpening a tool bit you want to remove a small amount of steel slowly, because to sharpen a tool bit little material has to be removed. Whereas with a lawn mower blade that is full of nicks - you need to remove a lot of steel. Because of the cost of a lawn mower blade the job needs to be done in the least amount of time as possible to keep the cost of each sharpening to a minimum. All MAGNA-MATIC sharpeners use 1-1/4" dia arbor hole grinding wheels, because this is the family of grinding wheels called "tool room" wheels. They are the type you would find in a machine shop on a surface grinder. With this arbor size you have a much larger section of grit size, hardness, composition, and dimension than with bench grinder wheels. So we are able to test and select the most productive grinding wheel for a lawn mower blade. A grinding wheel that removes a lot of steel in a short amount of time, and all with out burning the blade.

SAFETY
The MAG-8000 uses a single rotating direction to provide you with maximum safety - it will never pull the blade you are working with into the machine. Other grinders use dual direction motors to allow the ability to sharpen left and right-handed blades. This is NOT approved by ANSI (American National Standards Institute), this is the institution which OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) derives much of its policy from. The reason other grinders can "get away with" the dual direction motors, is because the "Outdoor Power Equipment Industry" is considered commercial and not industrial. But at MAGNA-MATIC we hold your safety in higher regard - so all of our equipment is designed to INDUSTRIAL safety standards to begin with.

The MAG-8000 also uses a 1-1/4 inch arbor size for its grinding wheel with a large ARBOR NUT, which is on a left-handed thread. The left-handed thread ensures that every time the MAG-8000 is switched "ON" the arbor nut is tightened. This safety feature ensures that the grinding wheel will never fall off the machine during use. Other grinders will use simple nyloc nuts on small 5/8 inch arbors, with dual direction motors. When the motor's direction is changed the nut can become loosened.

QUALITY
The MAG-8000 is built heavier than other grinders, this is done to provide rigidity. A rigid machine is needed for grinding to provide the user with a machine that runs smooth, quiet, and without vibration. Unlike other grinders the MAG-8000 does not need to be bolted to a work bench (but you do have the option to do so) because of its weight in a small package. The heavy body and other components of the MAG-8000 are laser cut for accuracy.

The MAG-8000 uses only the finest products to provide you with maximum performance and long lasting quality. Leeson motors are built to stand up and perform. Norton grinding wheels remove large amounts of steel, last long, and remove heat from grinding operation.

A number of components in the MAG-8000 have been machined out of engineered plastics to provide you with more performance and vision. The LEXAN windows of the MAG-8000 allow full vision of the work space, and protect you from possible grinding wheel breakage. Lexan at the proper thickness is bullet proof. The straight/flat lawn mower blade work table is made from ultra-high molecular plastic to provide you with a smooth area to slide the lawn mower blade back-and-forth to quickly sharpen a blade.

Our fast acting crank adjusting mechanism allows you to quickly adjust for grinding wheel wear and for changing the angle of the blade.
